The Story Behind The Warlock's Cauldron

I'm a guy who doesn't like hot sauce... who makes hot sauces.

I did not set out to make hot sauce. I just had too many jalapenos.

"I'm a guy who doesn't like hot sauce... who makes hot sauces."

The Garden Problem

It started with a garden that got out of hand.

A few years ago, I started gardening because I wanted to make some healthier choices. The plan was simple: grow vegetables, make salsa, enjoy the garden.

Then I grew jalapenos. A lot of jalapenos. I gave them to neighbours, canned what I could, and still had more peppers than I knew what to do with.

Eventually, people started saying the obvious thing: "Why don't you make hot sauce?" My answer was just as obvious.

"But I don't like hot sauce."

They told me to make it the way I would actually want to eat it. That changed everything.

The First Experiments

So I started playing.

I wasn't trying to start a business. I was trying to make a sauce that had flavour first, heat second, and enough personality to make people stop after the first taste.

For about two years, I made sauces for myself and my family. I tasted, adjusted, ruined batches, fixed batches, and kept chasing the moment where everything came together.

Then coworkers, friends, and extended family wanted to try them. I found out I loved watching someone taste something I'd made and hearing, "Wow... you made this?"

"Yeah, I know. I made it."

The Trades

Coffee, maple syrup, and the ideas that followed.

For a long time, I still had no interest in selling sauce. I was working full-time as a PSW at Belleville General Hospital, and I did not need another job.

So I traded. One of the nurses I work with owns a coffee business called Railbed Roaster. He traded bags of coffee for my sauce, and eventually I had enough coffee to ask, "Why not make a sauce with it?"

Friends traded me maple syrup too. Naturally, that became another sauce. Someone would bring an ingredient, I'd get an idea, and the cauldron kept getting stranger.

The Name

Then someone had a dream about me.

About a year and a half before I started the business, a physiotherapist at the hospital heard I had brought sauces to a potluck. He tried them all, including one made with ghost peppers.

He wanted a bottle right away. I told him it was a potluck and I did not sell sauce. He insisted on giving me twenty dollars anyway, so I brought him a bottle the next day.

Then he announced, in front of my patients, that he had dreamed about me. Everyone laughed. Then he explained: in the dream, I was standing over a cauldron, stirring away, like a male witch.

A warlock.

That image stuck. When I finally decided to turn the sauces into something real, The Warlock's Cauldron made perfect sense.

The Push

The company exists because people kept nudging me forward.

I don't think The Warlock's Cauldron would exist without the people around me. For months, my nurse friend told me I could make it work. I kept saying I was too busy. He kept reminding me I did not have to turn my life upside down.

Family and friends kept saying the same thing. More conversations. More encouragement. More people telling me I should actually do something with this.

By December 31, the walls came down. I finally thought, "Alright. Let's do this." And I created the company.

The Cauldron Rule

Flavour comes first.

The Warlock's Cauldron is not about making the hottest sauce possible. I make sauces for people who want heat with a reason behind it.

Every bottle needs its own personality. I want the ingredients to taste like something. I want the sauce to work on real food. I want people to get more than burn.

I may be the one standing over the cauldron, but a lot of people helped light the fire.

Ready for the lineup?

Five sauces, each with its own kind of magic.

From maple breakfast heat to coffee-backed savoury fire and ghost pepper fruit sauces, the lineup is built for flavour first.
